Fitzrovia feeds tens of thousands of office workers, students and shoppers every day, and halal eaters navigate it with less information than anyone. This guide covers what we know best: how to eat well, halal, around W1.

First: what the labels actually mean

  • "Halal" (unverified): a sign in the window. Might be meaningful; you can't check.
  • HMC certified: independently monitored by the Halal Monitoring Committee from slaughter to kitchen, the strictest UK standard. Certificates are displayed and verifiable.
  • "Halal options": part of the menu only, so ask what shares the fryer and grill.

If certification matters to you, look for the certificate, not the sticker. (For transparency: Tikkas chicken is HMC certified, and our whole kitchen is halal and alcohol-free.)

What a good W1 lunch should cost

Central London pricing creeps up but a proper halal lunch shouldn't exceed £10–12. Benchmarks worth holding: a full grilled meal with real protein under a tenner is good value; £8+ for a wrap with thin filling is not. Portion honesty matters more than price. Ours are a proper, filling portion of tikka per bowl: a full meal, not a snack.

Spice maps for mixed tables

The biggest halal-lunch friction is groups with different heat tolerances. Look for menus with a declared scale rather than "mild/medium/hot" roulette. Our five: Malai (none) → Hariyali (fresh) → Lassuni (gentle) → Classic (medium) → Angara (three chillies). Whatever restaurant you pick, a real scale means nobody gambles.

The Fitzrovia lunch circuit

Around Great Titchfield Street and Market Place you'll find everything from ramen to salad chains. Halal-certified grilled food is the rare category; most certified options are fried chicken. If you want grilled protein that's HMC certified, that's the gap we opened Tikkas to fill, two minutes from Oxford Circus at 1 Great Titchfield Street.
